Plum (Erik) Turkish Plum

Today on Blue Monday I'm showing the "ERIK" plum......but really it's the beautiful  BLUE sheet covering the lil' table.

This plum came to mind because the season is starting for these plums in Turkey soon. This photo was taken in Izmir when I was there a couple of years ago. I love these lil' tart sweet plums. Last time my husband went over to Turkey he brought me a bag of them in his suitcase......I guess customs didn't spot them. I just pop them in my mouth like candy...in North America I've never seen them though except in a can...which is not the same taste to me. Anyone here I gave a taste of that plum there faces would squint and say WOW!!! that is sour.

Between the months of mid April and May these plums are available in the markets....or just about on any busy corner.  They have  a unique tart and sour taste, unlike other plums...it's quite hard and crunchy.

It is best tasted when consumed chilled and /or covered with salt......I have never eaten it that way. I'm not a salt fan and the thought of all that salt makes me shiver.....I can see the high blood pressure rising. It is so popular in Turkey that the fans can hardly wait for the season to start.

Have a Happy Blue Monday and join smilingsally.blogspot.com for BLUE MONDAY!

  3. I don't like them at all Erika. Too hard for me. My husband loves them. Most of the men here eat them with rakı.

  5. They are AWFUL in my humble opinion! But my children love them and I can't understand why! They are sooooo sour - just unripe yet the folks here just love them. Too early yet though as we have had such a cold winter ... and it continues!

  6. Oh, I just love erik with a light sprinkling of salt. Wow, when I read your post, it made me realise how quickly a year has passed. It doesn't seem long since they were last out on the market.
