Roast Beef the Old Fashioned Way

These are the last of my summer flowers.........Begonia's and Dusty Millers, soon my husband will be yanking them out and putting in Mums. Here are some Scarlett Red Begonia's and the Dusty Millers.

Beautiful pink and red Begonia's.

Dusty Miller..........I have some that have grown quite tall, that is if Alvin the Chipmunk doesn't trample on them in the pots or the Racoon in the flower beds.

Roast Beef with Cabbage........The way my Mom and Grandma use to make.

I don't have a set recipe for this because I usually just wing it as I'm cooking. My Grandma [Baba] made it like this in the old days...........and I'm still using her old roasting pan.

I take a roast and carmelize it to seal in the flavour..........and then put into a roaster.

Secondly I chop up 1 onion, 2 carrots, 2 celery ribs and 2 garlic cloves and saute til carmelized in olive oil or canola I use sometimes. Add to pan where the roast is and sprinkle all over.

Then I take a 1 small cabbage and cut it inot wedges and put around the roast beef..........

Lastly........... I roughly take 1 or 2 cups of beef broth and pour over roast beef and cabbage wedges. Then my Mom use to take Lipton's Onion Soup dry mix and sprinkle over everything in the roasting pan...........you may need more seasoning depending on your taste buds and salt in/take.

I like to chop up some flat leaf parsley and add to that also along with a couple of bay leaves.

Then I let it roast at 350 deg. F. til done and nicely browned and carmelized. We like ours well done and melting in your mouth as husband will not eat anything that is rare.

Ready to go into the oven...........

Roasted and ready to be eaten and carved.

Yellow Flowers in my Garden

This Lady is overlooking my side of the house. I took this picture in the fall because I have artificial flowers in . In the summer I plant some annuals........but have found in the past that squirrels like to hide their peanut stash in there. So this year I left it with the artifical flowers and so far no one has noticed. The squirrels have even been known to actually dig a flower out and knock it to the ground............

Today I'm showing pictures of two yellow flowers that I have in my garden every year.........Cosmos and Black-Eyed-Susans

Cosmos

I always have Cosmos in my gardens...........some are white, pink and scarlett colour but my favourite is the yellow. The flowers are between 2 -4 inches in diameter...and are either single flowered or double.
They are a herbaceaus perannial flowering plant. They grow anywhere from 3 - 6 feet tall.
The word "COSMOS" is derived from the Greek, which means a "Balanced Universe".
I like to plant them in bunches on a good size area and then when they bloom it looks like a huge bouquet.

Black-Eyed-Susan

These Black-Eyed-Susans I have several bunches in my garden..........I love the yellow tall flowering bouquets that pop out from among my garden. I really should divide them, but every spring I always run out of time or the weather is bad or something else pops up and I just don't get to it.
There are actually 90 varieties of the Black-Eyed-Susan. this flower is best known of the coneflowers, so named because their centers are cone-shaped accentuates the cone........it is also a native plant to most of north America.

Marigolds

Today I'm participating in

Mellow Yellow Monday

with a "YELLOW MARIGOLD" flower.

I love the brilliant yellow colour as it peeks in the pots or just in the garden.

This year I planted some in my herb pots as to keep away some pesky squirrels and I hope to keep that darn Chipmunk out also. I hope this works as this is what my neighbour told me so I decided to try it out.

Did you know???? Marigold's were first discovered by the Portuguese in Central America in the 16th century.

Because of the strong pungent smell of these Marigold's leaves I planted them in my herb pots to discourage insects and hopefully a couple of Chipmunks. These Marigold's are sharing with some Italian Parsley and Sage.

Red Tulips

Tulips

Visit our Hostess Mary at "Ruby Tuesday" for some inspiration and fun.

I had to post these photo's of these 'red' tulips..........because there is a story behind them.
In my backyard I have this Lilac tree and underneath there is a bunch of these red tulips growing every year. Well for some resaon this particular squirrel rips the tulip heads off. This year I beat him.......and left a few tulips and when I looked the next day the tulip heads were ripped off. It's funny because there are other tulips around but for some reason he targets these..........or he knows that I'm watching him.

I put these into a vase and in a couple of hours when you look through the other photos they have opened up.

"RED ROSES"

For "Ruby Tuesday" today I 'm showing some long stwm dozen red roses that my husband sent to me on our "22nd" Wedding Anniversary. Where has the time flown, seems like yesterday we just celebrated our first. They were so fragrant and had a very red vibrant colour.

These flowers I received from my good friend and neighbour after my surgery last week. I'm not sure of the name of them but they did come with some Bird-of-Paradise flowers though.
